SoDA believes women are underrepresented in the widely understood IT industry. Despite bringing unique skills to the table (like multitasking, laser focus, and empathy), women are also treated like something spotted in the wild \u2014 interesting but potentially dangerous. We want to change those optics. That\u2019s why we start with \u201cWomen can do IT\u201d \u2014 a series of interviews with female specialists. Let\u2019s take off with\u00a0Ma\u0142gorzata Orzechowska<\/strong>\u00a0from SoftwareMill.<\/p>\n

What role do\u00a0you play in\u00a0your company?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a\u00a0Business Development Representative.<\/p>\n

What is your formal background and education? How did you end up in\u00a0IT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My\u00a0adventure started in\u00a0high school with an IT profile. A\u00a0long, long time ago, I\u00a0could even write you some code. Then I\u00a0decided it wasn\u2019t necessarily my\u00a0thing and went with English philology. I\u00a0finished college and became an interpreter. To\u00a0this day, I\u00a0mix translations with the work in\u00a0the IT industry. I\u00a0had my\u00a0language school, worked as\u00a0a\u00a0Sales Manager in\u00a0a\u00a0publishing house. Then I\u00a0found my\u00a0way to\u00a0a\u00a0company that developed an app for mobile ticket purchasing. This was a\u00a0full circle for me\u00a0\u2014\u00a0yet again I\u00a0found myself doing what I\u00a0really like and understand. Despite being a\u00a0humanist, I\u00a0love sinking my\u00a0teeth into technical dilemmas.<\/p>\n

How does your typical month of work look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

At\u00a0SoftwareMill, I\u2019m responsible for inbound sales, which are all business inquiries that come to\u00a0our mailbox. My\u00a0job is to\u00a0contact the company interested in\u00a0our services and schedule a\u00a0call. During a\u00a0talk, we\u00a0have to\u00a0know what the company expects of us, what are its business needs, and what kind of product we\u00a0would need to\u00a0develop. The next stages are the offer and technical calls with developers, so they can dive into the project a\u00a0little deeper. I\u2019m directly responsible for the whole path \u2014\u00a0from top to\u00a0bottom. Since SoftwareMill usually gets big projects, it\u2019s really hard to\u00a0say what my\u00a0typical month looks like. The sales funnel is long, the decision-making process takes time, and it all blends in\u00a0the end. All the projects, communications, paperwork, etc.<\/p>\n

But what might be\u00a0interesting as\u00a0well is that I\u00a0run English classes in\u00a0the company. We\u00a0always try to\u00a0excel at\u00a0everything we\u00a0do, and since some of our developers are running a\u00a0Polish project and don\u2019t have that much contact with English, I\u00a0have proposed these lessons. One hour twice a\u00a0week is a\u00a0healthy dose of a\u00a0foreign language. Especially when it comes naturally. We\u00a0just sit there and talk about everything, forcing the use of language less traditionally and more intuitively.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0also run spellchecks, as\u00a0our developers like to\u00a0write a\u00a0lot about technical stuff and share the knowledge about projects and technologies used to\u00a0make them.<\/p>\n

What is your biggest success in\u00a0the IT industry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So far? I\u00a0think the creation and running a\u00a0project of a\u00a0system destined for sport events tickets sale. In\u00a0the previous company, we\u00a0have achieved that with the W\u0142\u00f3kniarz Cz\u0119stochowa \u2014\u00a0a\u00a0famous speedway team. The initiative started with 5\u201310 tickets sold via the app, in\u00a0a\u00a0short time we\u00a0achieved exponential growth from match to\u00a0match. It wouldn\u2019t be\u00a0done without the teamwork \u2014\u00a0we\u00a0all worked hard. To\u00a0the point where our presence in\u00a0a\u00a0stadium didn\u2019t surprise anybody.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0SoftwareMill the biggest success is still to\u00a0come, project-wise. But what I\u00a0have right now is respect. The team believes in\u00a0me\u00a0100% and that\u2019s priceless. Maybe because I\u00a0have a\u00a0military past and they are scared of me\u00a0(laughs). I\u00a0was a\u00a0translator in\u00a0the US army, so maybe that\u2019s the case. I\u2019m joking of course \u2014\u00a0even if I\u00a0was too sold a\u00a0project for a\u00a0million bucks, the credit would go\u00a0to\u00a0everyone, not just me. The team is the most important thing in\u00a0the world.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What is your biggest professional challenge?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u00a0would love to\u00a0sell the entire software development team and win a\u00a0huge project. Then I\u00a0could put a\u00a0large team on\u00a0that and have the satisfaction of giving our developers a\u00a0bone to\u00a0chew. Having a\u00a0responsibility from top to\u00a0bottom, creating it from scratch, watching it grow\u2026 That what drives me.<\/p>\n

What is your professional goal?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u00a0don\u2019t want it to\u00a0sound cheesy but I\u00a0would like to\u00a0be\u00a0recognizable. To\u00a0have my\u00a0personal brand so strong that people would say: OK, that\u2019s the girl from the SoftwareMill. They code in\u00a0Scala and they do\u00a0it right. I\u00a0pursue the goal of having an equal sign between my\u00a0personal brand and the quality of the product. If someone sees me\u00a0or\u00a0wants to\u00a0talk to\u00a0me, it\u2019s inseparable from quality software and quality customer care. The relation between myself and the client is very important. Something might go\u00a0wrong, none of us is immune to\u00a0mistakes or\u00a0random accidents. The important part is that we\u00a0all have to\u00a0look for another solution and deliver the product nonetheless. After 18 months at\u00a0SoftwareMill, I\u00a0believe we\u00a0got it covered. Clients trust me\u00a0and that\u2019s everything at\u00a0the end of the day.<\/p>\n
