Did your career start in\u00a0the IT industry? What is your background when it comes to\u00a0your education and previous career path?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anna:\u00a0<\/strong>As\u00a0a\u00a0journalism student, I\u00a0moved to\u00a0Krakow to\u00a0write books and work on\u00a0the radio, but in\u00a0the beginning, I\u00a0found a\u00a0job in\u00a0a\u00a0restaurant on\u00a0the market square. During my\u00a0studies, I\u00a0met my\u00a0now long-time friend who worked in\u00a0IT. My\u00a0computer skills consisted of installing a\u00a0printer, and I\u00a0used the Internet mainly for Gadu-Gadu, but my\u00a0friend said that \u2018it was enough to\u00a0get started\u2019 and I\u00a0did it!<\/p>\n

Magdalena Bogda\u0142:\u00a0<\/strong>When it comes to\u00a0studies and my\u00a0first steps at\u00a0work, my\u00a0background is Public Relations and Marketing. This later turned out to\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0good basis for entering\u00a0project management<\/em>. I\u00a0was recommended my\u00a0first job in\u00a0IT by\u00a0a\u00a0friend from university who changed the industry himself. I\u00a0started working in\u00a0an interactive agency, managing several small projects.<\/p>\n

Michalina:\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0my\u00a0current company, I\u00a0started as\u00a0a\u00a0sales specialist, but before that, I\u00a0had worked as\u00a0a\u00a0social worker in\u00a0an orphanage. There I\u00a0was responsible for the relationships between parents and children, ensuring that family ties were not broken in\u00a0any way. After changing the industry, I\u00a0got into it very quickly and I\u00a0must admit that my\u00a0educational knowledge is useful when working with programmers [laughs].<\/p>\n

Adrianna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0am\u00a0a\u00a0biotechnology engineer and already at\u00a0the end of my\u00a0studies I\u00a0realized that it was not something for me. I\u00a0started to\u00a0study management, where I\u00a0wrote my\u00a0thesis on\u00a0\u2018Risk Management in\u00a0IT Projects\u2019. When at\u00a0some point I\u00a0had to\u00a0find a\u00a0new job, I\u00a0decided to\u00a0apply for the position of a\u00a0Scrum Master. I\u00a0went to\u00a0HTD for an interview and I\u00a0presented myself so well that I\u00a0have been working there for 9 months.<\/p>\n

Magdalena Ba\u0142ut:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0graduated from English Philology and after studies, I\u00a0worked at\u00a0school for over 4 years. I\u00a0was good at\u00a0it, but at\u00a0some point, I\u00a0felt that I\u00a0had achieved what I\u00a0wanted, so I\u00a0decided to\u00a0continue my\u00a0development and try my\u00a0hand at\u00a0a\u00a0different industry. I\u00a0found a\u00a0job as\u00a0a\u00a0project manager and started postgraduate studies in\u00a0Project Management at\u00a0the same time. Then I\u00a0managed to\u00a0get a\u00a0job at\u00a0CSHARK, where I\u00a0am\u00a0still working.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Marta:\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0theory, working in\u00a0IT is my\u00a0first job, but I\u2019ve actually been working since I\u00a0was 16. I\u00a0was for instance responsible for the organization of events, such as\u00a0the Pyrkon Fantasy Fan Convention. I\u2019ve been interested in\u00a0computers since I\u00a0was a\u00a0child, my\u00a0father instilled it in\u00a0me. Ultimately, however, I\u00a0studied Polish philology. After graduation, I\u00a0returned to\u00a0my\u00a0childhood interests in\u00a0IT, ended up in\u00a0the position of Project Manager and it was a\u00a0hit in\u00a0the bull\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n

Hanna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0graduated from the Wroc\u0142aw University of Technology in\u00a0the field of biomedical engineering with the specialty of medical electronics. Then when I\u00a0was looking for a\u00a0job, it turned out that it was quite a\u00a0niche specialization [laughs]. I\u00a0talked to\u00a0my\u00a0friend with whom I\u00a0was finishing my\u00a0engineering studies and she encouraged me\u00a0to\u00a0try my\u00a0hand at\u00a0programming. At\u00a0Etteplan, I\u00a0started from the lowest level as\u00a0a\u00a0Junior Software Design Engineer. In\u00a0the meantime, it turned out that I\u00a0feel better in\u00a0organizational roles and with the support of the company, it continued that way.<\/p>\n

What do\u00a0you value most in\u00a0your current role?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Magdalena Ba\u0142ut:\u00a0<\/strong>What I\u00a0appreciate about my\u00a0work is the fact that I\u00a0can develop and learn new things every day. Every day and every project is different. In\u00a0addition, the people I\u00a0meet on\u00a0a\u00a0daily basis are a\u00a0huge plus \u2014\u00a0they inspire and motivate me\u00a0to\u00a0act.<\/p>\n

Marta:\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0my\u00a0work, I\u00a0appreciate the fact that we\u00a0make products that are real projects with specific business goals. I\u00a0love the e-commerce industry for the fact that most people and companies that come to\u00a0us have a\u00a0specific goal on\u00a0which they base their solutions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hanna:\u00a0<\/strong>What I\u00a0appreciate the most is that there is no\u00a0routine, every day is different. In\u00a0our company, a\u00a0person in\u00a0the position of the Project Manager takes on\u00a0this role with all the associated tasks, so I\u00a0am\u00a0responsible both for the team and for delivering projects. I\u00a0also act as\u00a0sales support.<\/p>\n

Adrianna:\u00a0<\/strong>What I\u00a0like the most is the contact with people. I\u00a0am\u00a0an extremely social person and for me, being able to\u00a0directly help the team do\u00a0their job is something absolutely fantastic.<\/p>\n

Anna:\u00a0<\/strong>People, process, dynamics \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s never boring here. I\u00a0have always had a\u00a0knack for organizing, I\u00a0feel good in\u00a0places where I\u00a0can take something on\u00a0and deal with it. Before I\u00a0developed in\u00a0IT for good, I\u00a0was a\u00a0fitness club instructor for a\u00a0few years and saw how much fun it was to\u00a0motivate others.<\/p>\n

Michalina:\u00a0<\/strong>When it comes to\u00a0technology in\u00a0general, it is very inspiring that we\u00a0are able to\u00a0build something that will help people and what will make their lives easier. When I\u00a0started working in\u00a0IT 5 years ago, it may not have been that visible, but it has become especially needed now that we\u00a0are all closed at\u00a0home due to\u00a0the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Magdalena Bogda\u0142:\u00a0<\/strong>Due to\u00a0my\u00a0predispositions and character, it is important to\u00a0me\u00a0that I\u00a0have frequent contact with people and high work dynamics. I\u00a0really appreciate the ability to\u00a0create products that help people. The variety of projects and initiatives is also fascinating. Owing to\u00a0them, I\u00a0can come into contact with different types of customers and many teams, with different end products and users from different regions of the world.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Your greatest professional successes in\u00a0IT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Magdalena Bogda\u0142:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0have been working as\u00a0a\u00a0Service Delivery Manager for about 3 years, where, together with two other managers, I\u00a0am\u00a0responsible for a\u00a0team of over 50 people, to\u00a0which I\u00a0constantly recruit new people. This is a\u00a0huge success for me. It is a\u00a0great satisfaction to\u00a0share knowledge and answer various questions and requests, I\u00a0can see a\u00a0huge amount of information that I\u00a0have collected over the years and which allow me\u00a0to\u00a0help others.<\/p>\n

Hanna:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0<\/strong>first success was going down the path of Project Management. My\u00a0first task was to\u00a0supervise a\u00a0small project with 3 developers. I\u00a0was very nervous and felt thrown in\u00a0at\u00a0the deep end. Back then, I\u00a0had no\u00a0idea about management, I\u00a0didn\u2019t know what it entailed. However, I\u00a0managed to\u00a0successfully finish the project.<\/p>\n

Adrianna:\u00a0<\/strong>For me, it is a\u00a0success when our team works like a\u00a0kind of well-oiled machine. Owing to\u00a0this, I\u00a0know that I\u00a0am\u00a0also helpful and that the people who work with me\u00a0appreciate it.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Magdalena Ba\u0142ut:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0think that after I\u00a0received a\u00a0great benefit of the doubt from my\u00a0superiors, I\u00a0managed to\u00a0build a\u00a0nice working team that already consists of over 30 people. Most of the projects we\u00a0implement are successfully delivered, but this is our joint success.<\/p>\n

Michalina:\u00a0<\/strong>For me, the first moment I\u00a0felt that I\u00a0was doing a\u00a0good job as\u00a0Project Manager was the first Christmas since I\u00a0started to\u00a0work in\u00a0IT. I\u00a0got a\u00a0lot of cards then. Another thing is that as\u00a0an introvert, I\u00a0managed to\u00a0make friends with programmers in\u00a0my\u00a0team who are also introverts.<\/p>\n

Anna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0cannot indicate my\u00a0greatest success. In\u00a0this profession, you sometimes make good and sometimes bad decisions. PM\u2019s successes are built on\u00a0both of these. I\u00a0am\u00a0very happy with the way my\u00a0career is going. The biggest ones are still ahead of me.<\/p>\n

Marta<\/strong>: It was a\u00a0<\/strong>measurable success for me\u00a0to\u00a0speak at\u00a0the Agile Vienna conference in\u00a0September last year. It was a\u00a0great achievement that I\u00a0got there and got very positive feedback. Some people said I\u00a0should be\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0main stage\u00a0<\/em>[laughs].<\/p>\n

What surprised you the most about working in\u00a0IT? What is different from the common opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michalina:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0think that backend programmers may seem like reserved people at\u00a0first, but you can get through them quickly. For me, at\u00a0the beginning of my\u00a0work, the skills I\u00a0gained in\u00a0social work were absolutely crucial, because on\u00a0a\u00a0very general level the group dynamics is very similar. People like to\u00a0assume certain roles, so you just have to\u00a0manage it well.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Magdalena Ba\u0142ut:\u00a0<\/strong>When I\u00a0started working in\u00a0IT, I\u00a0didn\u2019t have any specific ideas about this industry. Of course, each of us knows the stereotype of an IT introvert. Currently, the IT world is very diverse, it is changing dynamically and you can meet a\u00a0whole range of personalities here \u2014\u00a0as\u00a0in\u00a0most industries, in\u00a0fact.<\/p>\n

Hanna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0think there is a\u00a0lot of variation in\u00a0the industry when it comes to\u00a0the people who work here. There are introverts, but there are also very sociable people. What I\u00a0had to\u00a0get used to\u00a0is the peculiar sense of humor for sure, but probably every industry has jokes that you don\u2019t understand if you don\u2019t work in\u00a0it [laughs].<\/p>\n

Anna:\u00a0<\/strong>When I\u00a0started, IT wasn\u2019t that well paid and popular, and then indeed when you entered the developers\u2019 room, most of them had long hair tied up in\u00a0ponytails and T-shirts with game characters [laughs]. Today there is no\u00a0rule \u2014\u00a0my\u00a0team includes both athletes and artists.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Magdalena Bogda\u0142:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0am\u00a0positively surprised by\u00a0many aspects and I\u00a0have not directly experienced the stereotypes associated with IT. There are a\u00a0lot of women in\u00a0the Project Management department of the company I\u00a0currently work for and many of them hold leadership positions. Part of the culture in\u00a0our company is that programmers contact the customers directly, which makes it very difficult to\u00a0nurture your inner dweeb [laughs].<\/p>\n

Adrianna:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0ex-husband is an IT specialist, so I\u00a0already knew that they were really great people who are open-minded, intelligent, and who like to\u00a0talk about various topics. What struck me\u00a0when I\u00a0started working at\u00a0HTD was how young the people who work in\u00a0our organization were.<\/p>\n

Marta:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0had no\u00a0ideas about this stereotype of a\u00a0dweeb IT specialist, but it stems from one reason. I\u00a0am\u00a0a\u00a0nerd, I\u00a0have always been very closely associated with the world of fandom, fantasy, and science fiction. This is also an area where a\u00a0lot of programmers work and these groups overlap very much. I\u00a0believe that this stereotype is largely untrue and should be\u00a0a\u00a0thing of the past.<\/p>\n

What else are you striving for? What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adrianna:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0career goals are clear for now \u2014\u00a0I\u00a0want to\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0great Scrum Master, I\u00a0want to\u00a0learn and deepen my\u00a0knowledge, because let\u2019s face it, 9 months is not terrific work experience. I\u00a0also hope that in\u00a0a\u00a0few years, I\u00a0will be\u00a0able to\u00a0become a\u00a0Scrum Coach.<\/p>\n

Anna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0want to\u00a0gradually increase the scale and, in\u00a0a\u00a0broader perspective, manage key projects, program,s or\u00a0project portfolio. Right now, my\u00a0focus is on\u00a0developing my\u00a0role as\u00a0a\u00a0resource manager. I\u2019ve been learning something new every day lately.<\/p>\n

Magdalena Bogda\u0142:\u00a0<\/strong>Ever since I\u00a0became a\u00a0manager, I\u2019ve been trying very hard to\u00a0focus on\u00a0whether my\u00a0department functions in\u00a0a\u00a0healthy way. We\u00a0want to\u00a0develop it all the time and it is important for me\u00a0that it not only \u2014\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0macro scale \u2014\u00a0delivers and meets business assumptions, but also \u2014\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0micro-scale \u2014\u00a0that individual people are satisfied with working with us.<\/p>\n

Marta:\u00a0<\/strong>There\u00a0<\/strong>is one very big task ahead of me\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it will be\u00a0the creation of a\u00a0team for new technology in\u00a0our company. It involves changing my\u00a0thinking from task-oriented to\u00a0operational, and it will definitely be\u00a0a\u00a0big challenge for me. For the last 6 years, I\u00a0have been working by\u00a0solving problems and carrying out specific tasks, and now I\u00a0will have to\u00a0figure out and find the areas in\u00a0which I\u00a0have to\u00a0put my\u00a0hands in.<\/p>\n

Michalina:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0would definitely like to\u00a0be\u00a0able to\u00a0build a\u00a0team on\u00a0my\u00a0own and deliver a\u00a0finished product from start to\u00a0finish. I\u00a0have the impression that in\u00a0such a\u00a0team, apart from technical competencies, soft skills are also very important.<\/p>\n

Hanna:\u00a0<\/strong>What I\u00a0dream about is leading a\u00a0really big team, over 20 people. I\u00a0would like to\u00a0see how the daily challenges will scale. Another goal that is related to\u00a0the former is to\u00a0make everyone working in\u00a0the team happy with what they do\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0daily basis.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Magdalena Ba\u0142ut:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0would like to\u00a0polish my\u00a0workshop and get the Project Management Professional certificate, one of the most popular certificates for Project Managers. Additionally, I\u00a0would like to\u00a0try my\u00a0hand at\u00a0other projects, currently, I\u00a0am\u00a0supporting projects for one customer, maybe soon there will be\u00a0time for new challenges.<\/p>\n

What advice do\u00a0you have for people who would like to\u00a0work in\u00a0IT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anna:\u00a0<\/strong>Listen to\u00a0people and see things more broadly than through the project methodology. Don\u2019t be\u00a0afraid to\u00a0ask questions. The better you understand your customer and team, the more you gain their trust.<\/p>\n

Michalina:\u00a0<\/strong>For me, trusting my\u00a0own abilities is the basis. As\u00a0women, we\u00a0are brought up in\u00a0believing that we\u00a0are fragile and we\u00a0prefer such a\u00a0style of communication. When you enter the IT industry, you definitely have to\u00a0get used to\u00a0a\u00a0more direct way of communicating.<\/p>\n

Magdalena Bogda\u0142:\u00a0<\/strong>If we\u00a0are in\u00a0a\u00a0company where there is a\u00a0person\/department dealing with IT, then let\u2019s try to\u00a0be\u00a0closer to\u00a0things related to\u00a0it, e.g. working on\u00a0a\u00a0website. Let\u2019s also look for companies that are open to\u00a0hiring and training juniors. Another thing is to\u00a0look for books and podcasts that will allow us to\u00a0familiarize ourselves with the vocabulary and ways of working in\u00a0the industry.<\/p>\n

Hanna:\u00a0<\/strong>You definitely shouldn\u2019t get discouraged and give up. If someone feels that they would like to\u00a0prove themselves in\u00a0a\u00a0certain role, they must simply try it.<\/p>\n

Magdalena Ba\u0142ut:\u00a0<\/strong>Postgraduate studies in\u00a0Project Management will be\u00a0a\u00a0good step to\u00a0start, as\u00a0they will help you verify if this is what you are looking for (if we\u00a0are talking about working as\u00a0a\u00a0PM).<\/p>\n

Marta:\u00a0<\/strong>Make sure you want to\u00a0work in\u00a0IT because you like it, not because you want to\u00a0earn good money. Otherwise, I\u00a0guarantee that you will be\u00a0tired of working in\u00a0a\u00a0position that will not give you satisfaction.
