According to\u00a0a\u00a0report issued by\u00a0the Gartner research company, we\u00a0can expect 20 billion devices connected to\u00a0the IoT in\u00a02020. It is worth adding that we\u00a0are not talking about mobile phones or\u00a0computers, but dedicated devices equipped with appropriate sensors and electronic mechanisms. An example would be\u00a0a\u00a0Raspberry Pi\u00a0with embedded sensors.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0the other hand, the latest International Data Corporation (IDC) forecast says that 41.6 billion devices will be\u00a0connected to\u00a0the IoT by\u00a02025.<\/p>\n

The above two reports indicate the direction in\u00a0which the market will develop as\u00a0well as\u00a0the huge demand for IoT solutions.<\/p>\n

Microsoft Azure IoT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Microsoft follows the market requirements and has a\u00a0large range of IoT solutions based on\u00a0the Azure cloud computing. IoT Hub: a\u00a0gateway<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is a\u00a0key service for any IoT solution. It primarily serves as\u00a0a\u00a0cloud gateway that connects all devices to\u00a0the cloud and establishes communication between them.<\/p>\n

What if we\u00a0do\u00a0not have permanent Internet access?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let us imagine a\u00a0situation in\u00a0which a\u00a0given device does not have permanent access to\u00a0the Internet. An example would be\u00a0a\u00a0container ship that sails on\u00a0the oceans. The Azure IoT Edge is the answer to\u00a0such situations. This service allows you to\u00a0implement and run Azure services, such as\u00a0Azure Cognitive Services, Machine Learning, Stream Analytics, or\u00a0your own solutions only on\u00a0the device, without the need to\u00a0send data to\u00a0Azure via the Internet. Once the device has access to\u00a0the Internet, it can send data to\u00a0Azure for further processing.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Real-time telemetry<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we\u00a0want to\u00a0view data from devices in\u00a0almost real time, we\u00a0can use the Azure Time Series Insights. This service is responsible for data storage and visualization.<\/p>\n

The Time Series Insights provides APIs available via REST or\u00a0WebSocket, so you can use the service in\u00a0your applications. Importantly, the Time Series Insights natively integrates with the Azure Event Hub.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Multi-device management<\/strong><\/p>\n

The device can send data to\u00a0our cloud only upon authentication. Of course, you can add a\u00a0single device manually, but what if we\u00a0have hundreds, thousands, or\u00a0even millions of devices? In\u00a0addition, we\u00a0can use many IoT Hubs in\u00a0our solution in\u00a0different regions of the world, and in\u00a0such a\u00a0case, we\u00a0would like the device to\u00a0communicate with the nearest IoT Hub in\u00a0order to\u00a0reduce data transmission across many regions of the world.<\/p>\n

The solution is to\u00a0use the Azure Device Provisioning Service which helps the Azure IoT Hub to\u00a0automatically enroll devices without human intervention. This service enables the enrollment of up to\u00a0millions of devices.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

1. The device manufacturer adds the device enrollment information to\u00a0the enrollment list on\u00a0the Azure Portal.<\/p>\n

2. The device communicates with the Azure DPS providing identification data to\u00a0confirm its identity.<\/p>\n

3. The Azure DPS verifies the identity of the device.<\/p>\n

4. The Azure DPS enrolls the device with the corresponding Azure IoT Hub and sets the desired device status.<\/p>\n

5. The Azure IoT Hub returns the device identifier to\u00a0the Azure DPS.<\/p>\n

6. The Azure DPS returns to\u00a0the IoT Hub information about connection to\u00a0the device. The device can now send data to\u00a0the Azure IoT Hub.<\/p>\n

7. The device connects to\u00a0the appropriate Azure IoT Hub.<\/p>\n

8. The device receives the desired device status from the IoT Hub.<\/p>\n

Internet of Things and security<\/strong><\/p>\n

Due to\u00a0the enormous increase in\u00a0the number of devices and the use of IoT devices, security issue must not be\u00a0forgotten. In\u00a0your solutions, you should also remember about the risks associated with inadequately secured tools or\u00a0communication with the cloud. Unfortunately, many devices may currently be\u00a0inadequately secured and are a\u00a0potential area of hacker attacks. The Microsoft Azure IoT services focus on\u00a0security first. The Azure IoT Hub encrypts communication using the Transport Layer Security. Access to\u00a0resources for devices occurs through the token verification.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Use of the IoT<\/strong><\/p>\n

The IoT is currently used in\u00a0many industries and sectors of the economy, including:<\/p>\n

\n\u00b7 health service;
\n\u00b7 industry;
\n\u00b7 agriculture;
\n\u00b7 telecommunications;
\n\u00b7 transport.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0you can see above, intelligent devices are widely used and it can be\u00a0concluded that in\u00a0almost every company there is room for introducing IoT solutions.<\/p>\n

The innovation in\u00a0the form of the Internet of Things is already in\u00a0place and will continue to\u00a0grow at\u00a0a\u00a0very fast pace. This is an area of enormous opportunities for companies to\u00a0gain competitive advantage in\u00a0their industry, despite the fact that we\u00a0are at\u00a0the beginning of transformation.<\/p>\n
