Today in the Women can do IT series, we talk to testers: Agnieszka Sadowska from BlueRider.Software, Agnieszka Krajna from Divante, Monika Buchaniewicz and Magdalena Mielke from TestArmy as well as Agnieszka K\u0119dziora, Agnieszka Kowieska, Ma\u0142gorzata Sadowska and Izabela Czarnecka from Soflab Technology.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Did you start your career in\u00a0the IT industry? What is your background when it comes to\u00a0your education and previous career path?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Magdalena<\/strong>: I\u00a0graduated in\u00a0geology and during my\u00a0studies, I\u00a0had a\u00a0future in\u00a0this field. I\u00a0had a\u00a0craze to\u00a0become a\u00a0geologist. However, the labor market quickly verified it [laughs]. I\u00a0was looking for my\u00a0own path, exact sciences were close to\u00a0my\u00a0heart. I\u00a0decided to\u00a0go\u00a0towards IT and programming. I\u00a0started with testing because I\u00a0decided that it was useful to\u00a0learn about different areas. Then I\u00a0came across the issue of security testing and hacking, which turned out to\u00a0be\u00a0what interested me\u00a0the most. I\u00a0changed my\u00a0employer with a\u00a0chance to\u00a0develop in\u00a0cybersecurity. There I\u00a0found myself under the wing of a\u00a0very good mentor and that is how it started my\u00a0adventure with pentests.<\/p>\n

Monika:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0graduated from pharmacy studies, but I\u00a0have been working as\u00a0a\u00a0tester since 2015. The idea to\u00a0enter the IT industry came when I\u00a0started looking for a\u00a0job after 10 years of maternity and childcare leave (I\u00a0have 4 children). I\u00a0found the \u2018Mum in\u00a0IT\u2019 program and I\u00a0suddenly discovered that testing could be\u00a0performed professionally. As\u00a0part of the program, we\u00a0had the opportunity to\u00a0obtain an ISTQB certificate. I\u00a0also worked remotely from the beginning \u2014\u00a0my\u00a0boss and I\u00a0laugh that I\u00a0did it before it became fashionable [laughs].<\/p>\n

Ma\u0142gorzata:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0studied electronics, but right after graduation I\u00a0wasn\u2019t convinced that I\u00a0would be\u00a0able to\u00a0find a\u00a0job in\u00a0my\u00a0profession. I\u00a0started sending my\u00a0CV wherever my\u00a0profile fit, and so I\u00a0got the opportunity to\u00a0work as\u00a0a\u00a0tester in\u00a0a\u00a0company in\u00a0Warsaw, in\u00a0a\u00a0profession I\u00a0had never heard of before. It was a\u00a0complete coincidence, but it turned out that that profession fit my\u00a0character very much. I\u00a0am\u00a0pedantic, so when they told me\u00a0to\u00a0check something thoroughly, it suited me\u00a0very well [laughs]. I\u2019ve been working in\u00a0the IT industry for 15 years now.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Sadowska<\/strong>: I\u00a0wanted to\u00a0become a\u00a0psychologist in\u00a0the past, but I\u00a0decided to\u00a0study biomedical engineering. I\u00a0took the risk and chose the specialization \u2018computer science in\u00a0medicine\u2019 \u2014\u00a0not convinced that it was a\u00a0good choice. During my\u00a0master\u2019s degree, I\u00a0already started working in\u00a0an IT company that ran projects closely associated with medicine \u2014\u00a0my\u00a0job was to\u00a0search for data, I\u00a0occasionally handled testing \u2014\u00a0and I\u00a0liked these moments the most. Therefore, I\u00a0decided to\u00a0take further professional steps in\u00a0the testing field.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Agnieszka Kowieska:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0<\/strong>studied psychology and dreamed of running my\u00a0own marketing agency. In\u00a02008, however, I\u00a0started working in\u00a0IT as\u00a0a\u00a0tester. Currently, I\u00a0am\u00a0also in\u00a0the third semester of applied computer science at\u00a0the Lodz University of Technology. I\u00a0chose this course because there are a\u00a0lot of databases, programming, and Artificial Intelligence. I\u2019ve been interested in\u00a0electronics since elementary school and secondary school \u2014\u00a0at\u00a0home, I\u00a0often blew the fuses out [laughs].<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Krajna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0finished geodetic studies and worked for several years as<\/p>\n

surveyor, but I\u00a0was disturbed by\u00a0the working conditions prevailing in\u00a0this market. At\u00a0work, I\u00a0always liked the analytical part of it the most, and it has a\u00a0lot to\u00a0do\u00a0with the work of a\u00a0tester. So I\u00a0decided to\u00a0explore this field. I\u00a0went to\u00a0postgraduate studies and got into testing. Then I\u00a0had a\u00a0few years\u2019 breaks, during which we\u00a0went to\u00a0the Netherlands and I\u00a0had children. A\u00a0year ago I\u00a0came back to\u00a0Poland and I\u00a0am\u00a0professionally active again.<\/p>\n

What do\u00a0you value most in\u00a0your current role?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Agnieszka Kowieska:\u00a0<\/strong>There\u2019s definitely a\u00a0lot of variety \u2014\u00a0you can work on\u00a0diverse projects. If someone likes to\u00a0develop and doesn\u2019t like monotony, testing will be\u00a0a\u00a0great choice.<\/p>\n

Ma\u0142gorzata:\u00a0<\/strong>You don\u2019t fall into one rut in\u00a0this profession and you can observe work in\u00a0various IT areas. For me, the \u200b\u200btesting field is interesting because it stands on\u00a0the border of the humanities and exact sciences, as\u00a0you need to\u00a0combine the ability of logical and analytical thinking with the user\u2019s perspective. Testing itself is like solving puzzles, which I\u00a0really enjoy.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Sadowska:\u00a0<\/strong>While being a\u00a0tester, you can prove yourself in\u00a0various roles \u2014\u00a0sometimes it is writing test scenarios, and sometimes you need to\u00a0help with project management or\u00a0setting new functionalities. It allows you to\u00a0learn new things and gives you the satisfaction of having a\u00a0real impact on\u00a0the final look of the product.<\/p>\n

Magdalena:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0also work in\u00a0a\u00a0company where projects change very quickly, which keeps me\u00a0from getting bored. I\u00a0have to\u00a0jump between different applications and testing devices very quickly. Each project is different I\u2019m up to\u00a0date all the time. It is also cool that my\u00a0job is to\u00a0provide users of systems and applications with security during their use and the security of their data. This is a\u00a0big responsibility because there is no\u00a0universal way to\u00a0deal with threats.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Agnieszka Krajna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0will not be\u00a0an exception here, because I\u00a0also think that testing is simply a\u00a0very developing job \u2014\u00a0the number of paths that can be\u00a0chosen is unlimited. I\u00a0also like the working atmosphere in\u00a0IT and the flexibility of working hours.<\/p>\n

Monika:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u2019m a\u00a0perfectionist by\u00a0nature and I\u00a0really like the fact that I\u00a0can genuinely influence what the system I\u2019m working on\u00a0will look like. I\u00a0also appreciate the fact that \u2014\u00a0owing to\u00a0remote work \u2014\u00a0I\u00a0can combine my\u00a0professional and private life.<\/p>\n

Your greatest professional successes in\u00a0IT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ma\u0142gorzata:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0professional success is certainly the fact that I\u00a0never gave up. In\u00a0the beginning, I\u00a0had various experiences in\u00a0this job, not always favorable work environment, however, I\u00a0stayed in\u00a0this market and at\u00a0the moment I\u2019m a\u00a0specialist for whom various companies compete.<\/p>\n

Magdalena:\u00a0<\/strong>The mere fact that I\u00a0managed to\u00a0get a\u00a0job as\u00a0a\u00a0security tester and how fast I\u00a0am\u00a0growing. After less than a\u00a0year of contacting the IT industry, I\u00a0became a\u00a0Pentester. Over the next year, I\u00a0obtained CEH certification. Personally, I\u00a0don\u2019t know any other girl-pentesters, although I\u00a0hope that this will change in\u00a0the near future.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tI can confidently say that I am proud to have managed to jump into a highly male-dominated IT area. It\u2019s nice to grow in an area that\u2019s dominated by men.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Monika:\u00a0<\/strong>It\u00a0<\/strong>was certainly a\u00a0big success that after 4 months of work, I\u00a0was transferred to\u00a0a\u00a0team working on\u00a0rebuilding a\u00a0large and complex system that is used by\u00a0over 100,000 users. I\u00a0was responsible for all the tests. I\u00a0still remember the day of migration, when all the test cases in\u00a0every possible variant were flying through my\u00a0head [laughs].<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tBy the way, I also discovered what I call the tester syndrome \u2014 if the system is going to fail, it will happen to me. It helps a lot at work.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Agnieszka Kowieska:\u00a0<\/strong>It would be\u00a0hard for me\u00a0to\u00a0choose only one thing because it seems to\u00a0me\u00a0that my\u00a0success really consists of minor achievements. The first was to\u00a0gain confidence and trust me\u00a0that I\u00a0would manage to\u00a0do\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Krajna:\u00a0<\/strong>The success for me\u00a0is the fact that I\u00a0managed to\u00a0return to\u00a0my\u00a0profession after a\u00a03-year break and start my\u00a0new\/old duties [laughs]. I\u00a0was quickly trusted and transferred to\u00a0a\u00a0complex, international project of great importance to\u00a0the company. I\u00a0am\u00a0still developing, I\u00a0write automatic tests in\u00a0my\u00a0spare time and I\u00a0am\u00a0proud of it.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Sadowska:\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0my\u00a0opinion, the trust I\u00a0enjoy among my\u00a0closest colleagues and customers is my\u00a0success.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What surprised you the most about working in\u00a0IT? What is different from popular opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Monika:\u00a0<\/strong>Before I\u00a0started working in\u00a0IT, I\u00a0often heard about communication problems between testers and developers, but to\u00a0be\u00a0honest, I\u00a0never experienced it. On\u00a0the contrary \u2014\u00a0developers often thank me\u00a0for noticing something they overlooked. I\u00a0think it is affected by\u00a0the way I\u00a0tell them about the mistakes.<\/p>\n

Magdalena:\u00a0<\/strong>The first thing I\u00a0encountered in\u00a0IT was the assumption that this industry is dominated by\u00a0men and that it is difficult for women to\u00a0find their place in\u00a0it. In\u00a0the area of manual tests, the proportion of testers to\u00a0testers was quite even, but in\u00a0the cybersecurity department, the division is very visible. This probably struck me\u00a0the most, I\u00a0was concerned that I\u00a0would not be\u00a0taken seriously and that I\u00a0would not do\u00a0what I\u00a0love. Now I\u00a0am\u00a0trying to\u00a0break stereotypes related to\u00a0the presence of women in\u00a0the IT industry.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Kowieska:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0idea that testing is a\u00a0very interesting and diverse profession has certainly come true. It turned out that the stereotype of an IT specialist sitting in\u00a0the basement was not true.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Sadowska:\u00a0<\/strong>The image of an IT-introvert in\u00a0a\u00a0flannel shirt and glasses collapsed very quickly. In\u00a0this industry, I\u00a0have met people who were very helpful and open, willing to\u00a0share their knowledge. Many of them provide me\u00a0with a\u00a0lot of inspiration for development.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Krajna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0was also convinced that this was a\u00a0more male world. I\u00a0remember my\u00a0brother spending his entire days in\u00a0front of the computer as\u00a0a\u00a0child. I\u00a0didn\u2019t understand it at\u00a0all then [laughs]. I\u00a0also thought that for most programmers, work is their only hobby, so they don\u2019t go\u00a0beyond things related to\u00a0IT.<\/p>\n

Ma\u0142gorzata:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0haven\u2019t had a\u00a0moment when I\u00a0was wondering whether to\u00a0work in\u00a0the IT industry and what it looked like.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tIn the late 1990s, when I was considering which studies to choose, the stereotype of a computer scientist wearing a flannel shirt was very strong, because that\u2019s what it was like back then. It was also a male world \u2014 there were few girls both in secondary school, in the mathematics and IT class, and later at the studies. It seems to me that although the IT world has changed a lot during these 15 years, there are still few women in managerial positions. I\u2019ve had an opportunity to take part in a few big projects managed by 15 guys and me. This is difficult.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What else are you striving for? What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Agnieszka Krajna:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0next plan is to\u00a0become an automation tester who applies good practices. My\u00a0further plans include following Magda\u2019s footsteps. In\u00a0the longer term, I\u00a0would like to\u00a0focus on\u00a0the development of web application security testing.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Sadowska:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0can repeat what Agnieszka said a\u00a0minute ago. At\u00a0the moment, I\u2019m also focusing on\u00a0automation \u2014\u00a0API and Selenium tests. I\u00a0would also like to\u00a0enter safety \u2014\u00a0I\u00a0have already started a\u00a0course in\u00a0this field.<\/p>\n

Ma\u0142gorzata:\u00a0<\/strong>This is a\u00a0difficult question because I\u00a0have reached a\u00a0point where I\u00a0already have a\u00a0lot of interesting experiences behind me\u00a0and I\u00a0don\u2019t know what to\u00a0do\u00a0next. The closest plans are to\u00a0do\u00a0an ISTQB course at\u00a0the Expert level. I\u00a0would also like to\u00a0look after tests in\u00a0large IT projects in\u00a0a\u00a0comprehensive way.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Kowieska:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0favorite project was associated with the development of Business Intelligence and hence I\u00a0chose the Lodz University of Technology because these studies included a\u00a0lot of issues related to\u00a0Big Data, data analysis using statistical methods, and Machine Learning. I\u00a0would like to\u00a0develop more in\u00a0this field.<\/p>\n

Monika:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0think about requirements engineering and business analysis, which interest me\u00a0very much now, but I\u00a0know that for organizational reasons it is not a\u00a0good time for me\u00a0to\u00a0changes. For now, I\u00a0am\u00a0gaining knowledge on\u00a0my\u00a0own. With such plans, for now, I\u00a0definitely want to\u00a0be\u00a0up to\u00a0date and be\u00a0able to\u00a0work in\u00a0the best possible way in\u00a0the project I\u00a0am\u00a0currently involved in.<\/p>\n

Magdalena:<\/strong>\u00a0First of all, I\u00a0want to\u00a0get more certifications related to<\/p>\n

safety, both from the technical and auditing side. Of course, I\u00a0would also like to\u00a0build and manage my\u00a0own test team someday. I\u00a0would like to\u00a0motivate more women to\u00a0deal with security and become more self-confident.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to\u00a0people who would like to\u00a0work in\u00a0IT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ma\u0142gorzata Sadowska:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0would tell such a\u00a0girl that she is not less smart than men and that she shouldn\u2019t be\u00a0afraid to\u00a0ask questions that seem idiotic, because when you ask them, it usually turns out that the other people did not know the answers either.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Sadowska:\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0my\u00a0professional career, what helped me\u00a0was the Chinese proverb: \u201cWho asks is a\u00a0fool for five minutes; whoever does not ask remains a\u00a0fool forever\u201d. It is worth asking and talking because then we\u00a0use the knowledge of people who are more experienced than us. IT-related professions have lower or\u00a0higher entry thresholds, but remember not to\u00a0rest on\u00a0your laurels and persistently climb up.<\/p>\n

Magdalena:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0advice is: do\u00a0not give up on\u00a0the first difficulties you encounter. Basic courses and training are often not enough, and after the basics, we\u00a0encounter a\u00a0wall, frustration, feeling that we\u00a0are stuck, and what we\u00a0know is not enough. Regardless of whether we\u00a0are interested in\u00a0testing or\u00a0programming, it takes a\u00a0lot of work and time, but it is not worth letting go.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Kowieska:\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0the beginning, if a\u00a0person would like to\u00a0enter IT, I\u00a0would recommend finding out which area in\u00a0this IT world is really interesting to\u00a0us: programming, testing, or\u00a0maybe business analytics. Then I\u00a0would look for training and job offers for people who have no\u00a0experience.<\/p>\n

Monika:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0<\/strong>quite often advise my\u00a0friends on\u00a0how to\u00a0start working as\u00a0a\u00a0tester, and I\u00a0always suggest that they should familiarize themselves with basic test tasks that can be\u00a0found online. This job requires meticulousness. You have to\u00a0repeat exactly the same action many times, which can be\u00a0monotonous. It\u2019s good to\u00a0be\u00a0prepared for this.<\/p>\n

Agnieszka Krajna:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0agree with the girls. If you\u2019re interested in\u00a0working in\u00a0IT, don\u2019t be\u00a0afraid and explore the topic as\u00a0soon as\u00a0possible and find a\u00a0job. You can learn anything if you want to.<\/p>\n

Magdalena:\u00a0<\/strong>Let me\u00a0just add that the offers we\u00a0apply for often offer with a\u00a0wide range of requirements. Don\u2019t be\u00a0afraid to\u00a0apply even if you meet 50% of them.<\/p>\n
