Women Can Do\u00a0IT is a\u00a0new project of Software Development Association Poland, in\u00a0which we\u00a0want to\u00a0disenchant the IT industry for women and show that it is an environment with room for anyone, regardless of past experiences.<\/em><\/p>\n

In\u00a0the last episode of the series, we\u00a0are speaking with Kaja Owczarczyk, Agile Coach and Head of Leaders at\u00a0HTD as\u00a0well as\u00a0Aleksandra Trzci\u0144ska, Sales Executive for Business Development and Partner Manager at\u00a0Cloudical Polska.<\/em><\/p>\n

Did you start your career in\u00a0the IT industry?<\/strong>\u00a0What is your background in\u00a0terms of education and earlier career path?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaja:<\/strong>\u00a0The fact that I\u00a0work in\u00a0IT is partly an accident and partly a\u00a0choice. I\u00a0moved from Warsaw to\u00a0Lodz and was faced with two job offers: start working in\u00a0my\u00a0learned profession, i.e. do\u00a0the translations for the Serbian and Slovenian markets in\u00a0a\u00a0window production plant or\u00a0become a\u00a0Project Manager in\u00a0an IT company. I\u00a0hesitated for quite some time. I\u00a0was thinking it was better to\u00a0work in\u00a0a\u00a0place where I\u00a0could use the skills I\u00a0acquired at\u00a0the university. Finally, I\u00a0decided that it was worth to\u00a0take a\u00a0risk and choose a\u00a0path that is more demanding at\u00a0the start, but also more prospective. That is how my\u00a0adventure started.<\/p>\n

Aleksandra:<\/strong>\u00a0I belong to\u00a0the generation that often changes jobs and at\u00a0the beginning of my\u00a0career path I\u00a0worked as\u00a0a\u00a0waitress, a\u00a0shop assistant and a\u00a0salesperson. The industries were the only thing that was changing and that is how I\u00a0ended up in\u00a0IT. I\u00a0also am\u00a0a\u00a0person who always said \u201cI am\u00a0looking for a\u00a0job\u201d. I\u00a0like changes and challenges. I\u00a0got a\u00a0call from a\u00a0friend with a\u00a0proposal to\u00a0take up a\u00a0job at\u00a0a\u00a0company he\u00a0was working at\u00a0that time, and I\u00a0gladly jumped in\u00a0at\u00a0the deep end. I\u00a0enjoy it very much that I\u00a0still can learn a\u00a0lot and that there\u2019s no\u00a0monotony.<\/p>\n

What do\u00a0you appreciate the most in\u00a0your current roles?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaja:<\/strong>\u00a0I find it wonderful how receptive and change-oriented the people around me\u00a0are and how easy it is to\u00a0implement good practices, how quickly one can change, and how to\u00a0open one can be\u00a0about it. At\u00a0HTD, we\u00a0have a\u00a0young team that is very open to\u00a0learning and to\u00a0continuous development. This is not only an empty slogan.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Aleksandra:<\/strong>\u00a0I like the fact that each customer is different. Each situation and conversation is different. I\u00a0like to\u00a0figure things out. Even if I\u00a0have implemented something, I\u00a0still seek opportunities to\u00a0optimize it. I\u00a0like to\u00a0share my\u00a0work, I\u00a0am\u00a0not the type of person that must do\u00a0everything by\u00a0myself. This gives me\u00a0a\u00a0sense of accomplishment, it is better to\u00a0achieve something with someone else than on\u00a0my\u00a0own.<\/p>\n

What are your biggest successes in\u00a0IT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaja:<\/strong>\u00a0I have two such successes. In\u00a0the first one, which is recent, I\u00a0was able to\u00a0introduce the leader role in\u00a0an organization. It is not just a\u00a0person who manages a\u00a0team but is actually implementing the leadership concept. It is a\u00a0pleasure to\u00a0see it working in\u00a0practice for over a\u00a0year now. The second success covers all agile transformation processes, which more or\u00a0less worked out. It was a\u00a0success because organizations started to\u00a0notice the value of scrum teams and roles such as\u00a0the Scrum Master or\u00a0Product Owner. I\u00a0am\u00a0very happy about it and it keeps me\u00a0going.<\/p>\n

Aleksandra:<\/strong>\u00a0I am\u00a0only 26 and I\u00a0can say that everyone is a\u00a0success [laughter]. The fact that I\u00a0am\u00a0here, that it happened so fast and that I\u00a0feel appreciated. I\u00a0am\u00a0setting my\u00a0own bars in\u00a0life. During the first degree of my\u00a0studies, the aim was to\u00a0find a\u00a0permanent job with which I\u00a0would be\u00a0satisfied after my\u00a0defense, and during my\u00a0master\u2019s degree studies I\u00a0wanted to\u00a0have a\u00a0better job. It is somewhat of a\u00a0self-fulfilling prophecy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What surprised you the most in\u00a0IT?<\/strong>\u00a0What differs from popular opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaja:<\/strong> When I\u00a0started working, I\u00a0was indeed thinking in\u00a0a\u00a0stereotypical way about an IT specialist in\u00a0a\u00a0flannel shirt. Yet, it turned out that the IT world is not as\u00a0impenetrable and reluctant to\u00a0share its knowledge. Those horrible developers really have a\u00a0lot of satisfaction from the fact that they can show their work and try to\u00a0translate it into something comprehensible for all.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tI was worried about whether I can understand this world, and I encounter these concerns in most women during job interviews. They are very afraid that they will be deemed incompetent, but after several weeks of working with our teams it turns out that they are welcomed with great openness. This impenetrability is only apparent and should not be discouraging.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Aleksandra:<\/strong>\u00a0I see a\u00a0big difference between technical persons from Poland and Germany. Germans are very open and always ask whether they can help. People from Poland are definitely more withdrawn. I\u00a0am\u00a0the one who has to\u00a0reach out and show interest. I\u00a0started working when I\u00a0was 21 and due to\u00a0the fact that I\u00a0look very young, I\u00a0very often had to\u00a0prove that I\u00a0am\u00a0competent at\u00a0the beginning. It was stressful, but I\u00a0was able to\u00a0deal with it quickly.<\/p>\n

What else are you aiming at?<\/strong>\u00a0What are your career objectives?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaja:<\/strong>\u00a0I will graduate from psychology soon and I\u00a0am\u00a0already introducing new competencies by\u00a0teaching our leaders how to\u00a0speak with people, how to\u00a0listen, observe them, and what to\u00a0pay attention to. I\u00a0am\u00a0trying to\u00a0convey the human, \u201csoft\u201d side in\u00a0the most extensive form possible. I\u00a0want to\u00a0be\u00a0useful and make people\u2019s work easier. I\u00a0want them to\u00a0be\u00a0pleased and feel safe. I\u00a0am\u00a0more of a\u00a0path-oriented person, and I\u00a0would like the path taken by\u00a0me\u00a0and my\u00a0co-workers to\u00a0be\u00a0as\u00a0good as\u00a0possible.<\/p>\n

Aleksandra:<\/strong>\u00a0I would surely want to\u00a0build my\u00a0own team because my\u00a0company is committed to\u00a0development. I\u00a0am\u00a0also considering taking up postgraduate studies, but I\u00a0am\u00a0trying to\u00a0assess what field would be\u00a0an added value for me\u00a0at\u00a0the moment.<\/p>\n

What is your advice for people who would like to\u00a0work in\u00a0IT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaja:<\/strong>\u00a0Be patient, do\u00a0not get discouraged, and listen actively to\u00a0others. Listening is always helpful, it is very appreciated and enables you to\u00a0soak into this world quickly.<\/p>\n
