Our client \u2014\u00a0Sani nudge<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0Danish healthcare technology company with the mission of eliminating hospital-acquired infections. Sani nudge delivers an innovative system to\u00a0monitor the behavior of medical personnel in\u00a0the context of compliance with hand hygiene procedures. The system connects data from a\u00a0network of specially designed IoT devices, combining them with a\u00a0dedicated platform.<\/p>\n

Despite specific guidelines for hand hygiene in\u00a0hospitals, infections related to\u00a0hospital-acquired infections are still a\u00a0huge problem. Only in\u00a0Denmark, 60,000 patients are infected every year as\u00a0a\u00a0result of violations or\u00a0non-compliance with hospital hygiene procedures by\u00a0medical personnel. This is particularly dangerous for cancer patients with weakened immune systems.<\/p>\n

The lack of reliable data is a\u00a0huge barrier for any hospital to\u00a0stop the spread of infections. For this reason, our client has designed specific hand hygiene monitoring software to\u00a0show how hospitals can reduce the risk of infections. The keystone of the project was to\u00a0increase patients\u2019 safety by\u00a0developing a\u00a0web app connected to\u00a0the special chip worn by\u00a0medical staff.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The new customized solution that we\u00a0created for Sani nudge is a\u00a0combination of data sent by\u00a0IoT devices to\u00a0the cloud-based platform. Each member of the medical staff is equipped with an electronic identifier, while dispensers with a\u00a0hand disinfectant and patient beds in\u00a0hospital rooms are equipped with devices detecting the activity of people within their reach. The data is recorded and sent to\u00a0a\u00a0system that detects whether an employee has encountered a\u00a0critical moment for hand hygiene (e.g. during contact with a\u00a0patient).<\/p>\n

The main goal of the project was to\u00a0create a\u00a0platform that could handle a\u00a0wide stream of large amounts of data (Big Data) in\u00a0real-time and to\u00a0design an interface that would be\u00a0intuitive and easy to\u00a0use at\u00a0the same time. We\u00a0have created a\u00a0unique dashboard for tracking the progress of hand hygiene monitoring and present reposts. One of the solutions for the web application included developing cloud-based IoT software. Using Microsoft Azure cloud solution, we\u00a0have started working on\u00a0the system to\u00a0improve the quality of database management and enable to\u00a0track the progress easily, draw conclusions, generate reports for medical staff in\u00a0a\u00a0clear data panel and automatically email them by\u00a0desktop or\u00a0mobile devices.<\/p>\n

Now we\u00a0are working on\u00a0optimizing the existing system to\u00a0face the growing scale of the solution and at\u00a0the same time deploying new functionalities to\u00a0enable people to\u00a0gain a\u00a0better insight into the data on\u00a0all possible devices \u2014\u00a0desktops, laptops, and mobiles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Rapid data processing by\u00a0beacon integration resulted in\u00a0a\u00a0very smooth working app, that is quite self-explanatory and easy to\u00a0use. The app responds to\u00a0the high demand to\u00a0prevent infections from spreading in\u00a0hospitals through appropriate data analysis. Thanks to\u00a0this solution, heads of medical institutions can constantly measure the effects and pay more attention to\u00a0proper care of the hand hygiene of their staff. Several hospitals have achieved the success of saving lives and millions of euros as\u00a0a\u00a0result of the introduction of a\u00a0hand hygiene monitoring system. The effects of our cooperation are incredibly satisfying and the numbers show how much success has been achieved so far:<\/p>\n

  • more than 1,000 chips worn by\u00a0medical personnel in\u00a0Europe,<\/li>\n
  • the system has been introduced in\u00a0such countries as\u00a0Denmark, Finland, and Germany,<\/li>\n
  • hand disinfection in\u00a0medical facilities has been increased by\u00a0as\u00a0much as\u00a030%,<\/li>\n
  • the spread of infections in\u00a0hospitals was reduced by\u00a018%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    It is worth mentioning that Sani nudge was nominated for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 award in\u00a0the \u201cstartup\u201d category.
